Salt Application Oversight and Environmental Responsibility

Application of salt in winter maintenance has increasingly become an environmental concern in the northern states. Chloride concentration is federally regulated by EPA and causes a number of environmental impacts on freshwater watersheds. Because cleanup of this chloride contamination is not practical the only solution is to limit its application to only what is necessary to achieve the desired level of service. Join Patrick Santoso, Director of Operations at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Technology transfer center and Phill Sexton, CSP, ASM, who will help to introduce the environmental concerns associated with winter management operations and ways to reduce the amounts of salt applied. In this course you will:

• Understand the environmental and infrastructure impacts of chloride contamination resulting from road salt
• See how the regulatory process has been implemented to resolve the problem in selected New Hampshire watersheds
• Learn how application rates connect to weather and road surface temperatures
